The word Yoga in Sanskrit means Union. This can be explained in many ways. Union between Body, Mind and Soul, between object and the subject, or between the individual consciousness (Jivatman) and the universal consciousness or the Soul (Atman). The whole practice of Yoga basically is a very advanced blueprint on how to realize this Union. This practice involves moral rules on how to live righteously, how to work with the body & breath, use the senses correctly and still the mind. The practice of the poses (asanas) in the West has mostly come to be associated with Yoga. This kind of Yoga is called Hatha Yoga and is one specific form of learning to experience and realize Yoga through the body. Experiences of balance, happiness, love and emotional stability are all wonderful by-products of the practice. Read more about Yoga and what it enhanced here.
Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. This helps to improve general fitness and overall well-being. Similar to Yoga, Pilates concentrates on posture, balance and flexibility. In Pilates the chance of injury is much lower than with other more strenuous forms of exercise. Pilates also focuses on the mind-body connection. While doing the various exercises your mind needs to be constantly aware of your breathing and the way your body moves.

Yoga studios in Amsterdam or any Western part of the world offer a lot of different yoga styles. Over the last 100 years, Yoga made its way from India into the rest of the world. To make Yoga easier to access for Western people, the physical aspect of yoga, Hatha Yoga and its poses (asanas), where the main things that were adapted. In the West, we are schooled through a scientific objective way of reviewing the world. That is why coming through something as spiritual and subjective as Yoga through something relatable as the body is often a good starting point.
Because there is such a wide difference in people, along the way certain aspects of Hatha Yoga were emphasised into different styles. For active and strong people, for instance, the flow aspect of Hatha Yoga was adapted into Vinyasa Yoga. For the more introspective types, Restorative and Yin Yoga was created.
